Crochet for beginners: The single crochet stitch

How to crochet for absolute beginners - Master Class #5:  How to crochet the single crochet stitch

After you have learned the foundation row, and how to count your stitches, the next step is to learn the Single Crochet. The Single Crochet Stitch (abbreviated sc and shown as an x in charts) is the most fundamental of all stitches in crocheting. Once you get a grasp of it, you will be able to make small variations, and you will know all the other stitches!

It is the shortest stitch in height and produces a dense, compact fabric that can be used in many projects from scarfs to blankets, and anything in between.

Now let’s get to it!

How to crochet the Single Crochet Stitch

  1. After your foundation row, make one chain.
  2. Insert the hook into the top of the second chain, skipping the one chain you just made.
  3. Take your yarn and yarn over the hook. Pull through the chain stitch. Now there should be two loops on your hook.
  4. Yarn over once again, and pull through both loops.
  5.  Congratulations! You have made your first Single Crochet.

Repeat this process as many times as necessary (as many stitches you have).

Beginners tip: remember, the slip knot does not count as a stitch, and I always recommend counting your stitches before moving to row 2.

How to crochet the Single Crochet Stitch: row 2

To work the second row of the single crochet, you need to turn the work counterclockwise and work back across the first row you just made.

After you have turn your work, the next step is to make what is called a turning chain, which is making one chain to obtain the height of the following stitches.

Continue working the single crochet; this time, inserting the hook into the ‘V’s, instead of inserting it into the top part only.

Now that you know the single crochet stitch you can use it over and over again to make beautiful, meaningful projects! Please share them with us on social media using #creatingmadesimple. Also, share this tutorial with a friend that might like it. Sharing is caring ✌️ Thank you, my friend.✨
